Finding a strong supportive community is hard.

In the past it was much easier to belong to a community of like-minded individuals. We didn’t move around as much, traditionally settling down within 20 miles of where we grew up. We raised our children and retired in the same house we bought as newly-weds Our friends and neighbors were often the same throughout the years.

It was common for us to stay in the same company throughout our career and develop tight lasting bonds with our fellow co-workers. In short, community used to be very much rooted in geographic proximity.

Today things have changed radically. Homeowners typically move every seven years, and most of us can expect a complete career change five or more times in our lifetimes. We work longer and commute farther, barely finding enough time to spend with our families. Often we never even see our neighbors except to wave in passing. Traditional communities, like churches and organizations, have seen a drop in attendance in recent years. Many of us are feeling the loss of that kind of community bonds we grew up with.
